Metro Manila Subway Project Updates of Tunneling Works

Metro Manila Subway Project Visited by Japan PM Fumio Kishida The Philippines Department of Transportation assured the public that it was on track to completing the Metro Manila Subway projects funded by the government of Japan, which has long supported the Philippines' ambitious rail expansion initiative, particularly in Mega Manila. On November 4, Japan Prime Minister Fumio Kishida visited the construction of the Metro Manila subway in Valenzuela City after his address at the House of Representatives. Prime Minister Kishida was accompanied by Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista, who showed him the launching shaft of the MMSP’s tunnel boring machine in the Valenzuela depot. He also made a stop at the Philippine Railways Institute Interim Training Center to experience the train simulator, which is part of Japan’s technical assistance grant. On X (formerly Twitter), Japanese Ambassador to the Philippines Yoshikawa Kazuhiko posted photos of Kishida’s visit at the iconic Metro Manila Subway, which he described as the Project of the Century. Civil works are ongoing for the 36-kilometer Metro Manila Subway Project. A third of the multi-billion-peso Metro Manila Subway Project has been completed with much of the accomplishment coming from the design and procurement of equipment, while the design and procurement is almost complete, actual construction of the subway is only at 5.6 percent as of July 2023. The project will be implemented in two phases in multiple contract packages. The MMSP contract package (CP) 101 includes the construction of the first 7.3km section of the project from the Depot in Valenzuela to the north of Metro Manila, including the depot, three stations and six shield tunnels, which connect the stations. Tunnel excavation commenced in January 2023. The tunneling work involves the construction of six underground tunnels with a total length of 9.5km with an inner diameter of 6.1m. The project will use up to six earth pressure balance tunnel boring machines (TBMs). CP102 encompasses the construction of two stations, Quezon and East Avenues, for the MMSP. Construction of these stations commenced in April 2023. CP102 will connect commuters to Quezon City’s central business district, government offices, and private institutions. CP103 of the MMSP includes constructing the Camp Aguinaldo station, which will connect the Anonas to other stations and NAIA terminals. The pre-construction works for the station commenced in November 2021. CP104 includes the construction of two subway stations and tunnels at Ortigas North and South. In comparison, CP105 involves tunnel works and the construction of two stations, the Kalayaan in Makati City and Bonifacio Global City terminals in Taguig City. CP106 involves electrical and mechanical systems and track works. CP107 includes designing, supplying, installing, constructing, testing, and commissioning 240 train cars or 30 eight-car train sets for MMSP. CP108 includes the construction of the Lawton to Senate tranche and CP109 includes the spur line linking to the Naya Terminal 3 station. The Department of Transportation last July this year showed for the first time the progress of the construction of the Metro Manila Subway system. The 200 meters of the subway's southbound lane have already been constructed from the Valenzuela depot since the tunnel boring machine started digging in January.
