Welcome to the world famous Butchart Gardens, A National Historic Site of Canada. The best blooming gardens for over 100 years are located in Brentwood Bay, BC on Vancouver Island, about a 25 minute drive from downtown Victoria. This blooming season was filmed in the Spring. Over time I will showcase each of the magical seasons Butchart Gardens has to offer. The vision of Jennie Butchart was to transform the worked over limestone quarry into the magnificent gardens we visit today. The Gardens boast over 900 varieties of bedding plants that number in the millions. Rare and endangered trees are located throughout the Gardens. Over the years, sections of the property have been transformed into themed gardens, the most spectacular being the Sunken Garden. The Italian Garden, which is located on the former tennis court, along with the amazing Rose Garden. The Japanese Garden is located on the seaside of the property. The Butchart Gardens remains in the care of the descendants of Jennie Butchart and are transformed season by season with over 55 acres of gardens and maintains a staff of 50 Gardeners. Along with the Gardeners there are countless full time staff, part time staff and seasonal staff that maintain the various facilities that make up the spectacular grounds of the Butchart Gardens. 2004 marked the 100th anniversary of the Butchart Gardens and two totem poles were carved in classic Coast Salish style by master carvers Doug La Fortune of the Tsawout Band and Charles Elliot of the Tsartlip Nation. Butchart Gardens hosts many concert venues every summer which showcases some of Canada’s finest local talent and talent from around this magnificent country. The Rose Carousel is a favourite of mine and the best up and down adventure $2.00 can buy. Every Saturday during the summer months, a truly remarkable fireworks display to music fills the evening sky. The month of December is transformed into an elegant display with millions Christmas Lights and is one of the most magical places on Vancouver Island. The twelve days of Christmas are each on display throughout the Gardens. Festive carollers in the courtyard fill the air with Christmas carols to delight one and all. There are several dining options available, from cafeteria style dining, to High Tea or the fine dining room. Open times vary and some require reservations. You can bring a picnic with you and find an exceptional spot to eat and enjoy the scenery. The gift shop has quality, local artist crafts and designs, and well thought out gifts for purchase, along with your favourite flower and plant seeds and teas. Dogs are permitted, and must be on a leash and stay within the path borders. Every season is a new awakening and is sure to please when ever you visit. Thanks for coming on this adventure with me.
