Since getting tenure and my promotion from assistant to associate professor, you will notice that I have been struggling with a sense of self and purpose. Part of the reason is because of this YouTube channel, and that it is an oddball activity in academia. I think this is pretty common with most people that are in academia. I have not met too many people that do not struggle with being a professor, and they experience a tremendous amount of emotion once they become an associate professor.. Many of us worry about getting denied full professor, and get stuck at associate professor. For me, It is not that I worry about getting denied promotion to full professor. I am pretty sure that this will occur eventually at some institution, if not at my own. I have seen many of my friends and colleagues make their way towards full professor. The biggest struggle for me is realizing that the things I'm doing are important, and that other people are accepting of my choices. In another words, the struggle for me as an Associate Professor is to know that I am important. I have come to realize that in terms of the publishing game, I will likely never be as prolific as other people. I will never have written as many articles, books, and attended conferences as many of my friends and colleagues. The advice that I can give other professors that going through the associate professor stage in Academia is to keep doing what you are doing. While I will continue to likely have moments of strong emotions due to not measuring up to top scholars, the things that I been most proud about are the things define who I am, and are not necessarily ‘productive.’: 1. My wife and I continue to love each other, and work on strengthening our marriage. 2 .I care about others, so much so that it is a fault. I care about what other people think help me and it gives me tremendous stress and anxiety. 3. If I see somebody on the street that is falling, I tried to be the person that will pick that person up at the expensive of my career. My advice for associate professors is to stay true to who you are as a person. The reason you got to where you are is because of the things that you have done. It might not be perfect, but you were able to achieve extraordinary things doing the same old ordinary things that you've done in the past. My favorite videos pertain to incentives, goal setting, and learning from failure to drive behaviors such as weight loss, stopping telemarketers, creating novel technologies, and creating new movements. https://r3ciprocity.com: Peer proofreading and editing platform A new platform where you can earn credits by editing other people's documents. Use these credits to have your own work edited. If you do a good enough job, you can convert these credits to money. The goal of the platform is to get people to 'pay it forward' and help other people out by creating incentives for people to give back.
