ArcheAge 4.0 MMORPG Gameplay - Naval Arena (Bloodsalt Bay)

Amidst 4.0's incredibly shaky start (coming with a triple whammy of broken AF patch, DDOS attacks, and incoming holiday break for the AA teams), we have the new naval arena instance, Bloodsalt Bay. It's a 5v5v5v5 PvE arena where players are grouped into teams and then sent out on ships for a free-for-all. The objective of the arena is to collect as many ghouls as possible while destroying or cockblocking your opponents to take their ghouls. There are a couple environmental obstacles you have to work around and special buffs available that can give an edge to your team. To be frank, it's a fun mode. You get to experience a taste of ArcheAge's naval system without any of the unbalanced PvP and there is a certain skill level that can be gained by playing often. It's also a cross-server arena, so you can queue up with players from other servers. That said, this arena doesn't feel anywhere near complete. This mode sorely begs to have premade teams available. Hopefully this is something XL will add in as they continue working on their cross-server tech. There also needs to be something to balance out 3-man teams vs 5-man teams. The other thing is that the arena itself, while quite a visually striking instance, feels somewhat lacking in terms of design. The current system is very simple with only 2 buffs (one of which is near useless) and pretty static obstacles even though there are plenty of "dynamic" elements happening here. This really shows the limits of XL's version of CryEngine and that they need to invest more on expanding what's under the hood instead of just tweaking bits and pieces. There are also issues with the DX11 version of the instance (waves become so large that they engulf the entire map) and optimization problems that tank the frame rate (particularly during collisions). Overall, it's a neat gimmick for ArcheAge and the rolling waves of the instance give it kind of a "Sea of Thieves" kind of feel. But it really needs more work done to flesh it out further, right now it feels more like a cool prototype than something polished enough to ship (no pun intended).
