Warning this episode contains graphic images⚠️ I didn’t have a good start to the day having woken with some sort of allergy / reaction to heat / or dust in eyes issue. Medics suggested antihistamine but I was hard on vision with the weight of my puffy eyelids and also with a thick head. With temperatures due to be even hotter than previously I had a decision to make… Tablets down 💊 it was to the start line for me and Big Buddy. I had to fight! The first 80km was tough trying to find my rhythm and see, but as the pills kicked in the eyes eased and I found my flow. By lunch I was feeling solid and had demolished my 4.5 litres of water already! The heat started to intensify and post lunch hitting the dunes in the mid day heat felt cruel. The light with the sun at its highest was hard on the eyes that were already struggling to see contrast but I rode steady and smooth. Only three spills, two simple lifts and one spin round on the side of big dune recovery, pleased there with my riding. The heat was brutal. Brutal brutal!! More intense and so I just drank and drank. Total fluids consumed in my 7h30 riding day was 10.5 litres and I stopped for 9 pees. I felt like I was riding for my life with the heat. If I stopped or fell I knew I would dramatically overheat and it could be serious. So I just pushed on!! Post dunes the “shit tracks” with no rhythm or flow, just snotty lumps and sand with lots of turns meant digging so deep. Words can. It explain what racing and fighting very technical terrain in 46-52 degree (125 Fahrenheit) feels like. Horrific. Mad proud to have made the finish. A LOT of bikes didn’t even start today and many did not finish or are in the process of being rescued. 💪 I also came 29th in stage 5 of the Morocco Desert Challenge. Fighting on!! Also. RIP. Sadly disaster struck again this race with the desert taking a second life. Malle Moto rider Bram van der Wouden (#110) succumbed to the heat and exhaustion. Other participants found him lying next to his motorbike. Bram presumably stopped to rest. The medical intervention team arrived very quickly but there was nothing more they could do. The day before a terrible racing accident took Laurent Lichtleuchter. We all accept the risks of racing but fully support the organisation in cancelling the moto stage 6. The heat in the dunes is exceptional and unforgiving, and we are very vulnerable on bikes when the temperature peaks at 52°c / 125f in this heat wave. We will rest and allow the body to recuperate as much as possible before the final two stages of the Morocco Desert Challenge. RIP. My love and thoughts are with their families. No race is worth a life so you have my word that I will not fight too hard. 🖤 This is part 3 of a 4 part series showing you the real behind the scenes of one of the toughest races out there.
