Once it gets dry in the plant the Dry pods will look like this, we are going to collect the seeds and sponge from this. once it dries like this, it is very weightless. Once it is maturied and hard it cannot be used for cooking. leave it in the plant until it turns to this brown color, don't harvest the matured green ridge gourd and dry it, this will not give matured seeds. when you shake the pods like this, you can hear the sound of the seeds inside the pods. To take the seeds easily, at the bottom of the Ridge gourd you will see this sharp end, which can be broken with your fingers, if it is hard like in this pod, you can use stone or hammer to break it. once you open it you will notice the hallow space in it. shaking the pods will push the seeds outside. Take a plate or container and keep shaking the dry pods, this will help get all the seeds with in the pods. The number of seeds in one Ridge Gourd is based on its height and size, you get atleast 100 seeds in a pod, in some pods that I opened earlier, I have got more than 300 seeds. These seeds once taken out needs to be protected in dry, cool and space free from buys. Instead of taking the seeds out and protecting it, just take the seeds from pods 2-3 days before you plant, seeds inside the pods are much safer. Now next step is to take the sponge from this dry pod, to do this take water in a container and soak the dry pod inside it, take water that is sufficient to dip the entire dry pod, The hole is already there at the bottom which we put to take the seeds, we can break the top part little bit, so the dry pod will absord more water faster, Let me add some more water so that it can entirely be inside water, as it is pushed into the water, the air inside the pod is coming out. Initially you need to hold it tight so that the water enters inside it and makes the dry pods heavy. It needs some more soaking in the water, I am going to put it in the water whole night and will try peeling the skin in the morning. keeping the stone or some other heaving object will make sure it is fully dipped inside the water. It is the morning and the skin color has changed to dark brown that indicated the skin is now ready to be peeled, now it will be easy to peel the outer skin, Instead of peeling from top to bottom, peel from the side so it will be easy to peel. I am using knife to smoth the sharp edges on the pod. Now 90% of the skin is peeled and you can see the fiber. Now the skin is peeled completely and this fiber part needs to be washed 4-5 times so that the gel part of the fiber will go, we have to dry this for a day. This water is good for the plants as the pod was soaked all night. this is what I got after it dried, before I use it, I am going to cut it to small pieces, we can use the knife, but it is bit hard to cut it with knife. I am trying with the scissor and it is easy to cut with scissor. inside this sponge this is where the seed was before we took it out. you can cut it even little smaller for the childerns to use this sponge. this sponge can be used for bathing, as this cleans the dead cells in the skin and helps prevent from many skin diseases. also, this sponge can be used for cleaning vessels and dirt on the floor, also this can be used for making any hand-craft items. The one that you are seeing now has black color in it, becuase once you use this sponge it needs to be washed and dried completly otherwise the fungus/bacteria will form in this sponge, because the fiber part still act as food for the fungus/bacteria.
