Improve Your Reading Comprehension in English! [with Emily & Brian]

Maybe you can read in your target language… but can you really understand it all? Reading comprehension is key when becoming fluent in a language, but it’s not always easy! Here are some of our favorite tips on how to improve your reading comprehension skills! 1. Choose the right level! Choosing the correct level and breaking things up into smaller segments can be very beneficial in helping you stay motivated. Don’t start reading at too high of a level – it can really take away motivation and the excitement of learning! Reading in phases can help, too! First, read the whole section without stopping, then underline new words, look them up, then read the whole section again. Did you understand more the second time? 2. Read that again! Read things you’ve already read in your native language, like your favorite novel or read subtitles in your favorite movie! This helps ease anxiety and you’ll understand more of the story since you already know the plot of the story. 3. Mix it up! Read different types of materials. You can read newspapers, short stories, comics, etc. Just be sure to read things that interest you! Another fun tip? Read the subtitles in your target language while watching a movie or TV show! You get the benefit of listening to the words and reading them at the same time! You could also read transcripts of podcasts while you’re listening to them, too! 4. Increase vocabulary! Understanding the words you are reading makes the process of reading much more enjoyable. But, there’s no way around learning new vocabulary – you just have to learn it, so enjoy the process! There are tons of tools out there to help you increase your vocabulary. You can use flashcards, online dictionaries, or the lingoni app, which has a whole section on increasing vocabulary in a fun and practical way! 5. Be patient and keep going! Learning how to read in another language takes time. And learning how to really comprehend what you’re reading takes even more time. But it is worth it! Be patient with yourself.
