SOUNDBITE: (German) Oskar Sommer, Managing Director of the Herrnhut stars company: "The important tradition of the star is that the whole family and friends come together during Christmas time to put the star together. I always say, 'the children should read the instructions, the mother tells the father exactly what he has to do and the father does exactly what the mother tells him to do.' Then it works." 28. Some of the most well known stars come from a town in Germany - Herrnhut. STORYLINE : During the Advent and Christmas season, Moravian Herrnhut stars decorate many apartments, churches and social institutions, as well as streets, squares and shop windows. The history of this tradition dates back to the beginning of the 18th century, when descendants of the church from Moravia / Czech Republic settled in Germany and founded the town of Herrnhut. It became the starting-point of world-wide missionary work of the Moravian Church. 150 years ago the Moravian Church had boarding schools where children coming from missionary families were accepted. In order to make the separation from their parents easier, especially during Advent, one teacher began to make a star out of cardboard and paper. Soon the students were making these stars themselves. The star's design is based on the star of Bethlehem, which in the Bible's story of the birth of Jesus Christ, led the three Wise Men to Jesus' birthplace. It was only at the beginning of the last century, when a moderate production-line started that there was an increase in the popularity of this Christmas tradition worldwide. Oskar Sommer, Managing Director of the Herrnhut stars company explains what makes up one of their stars. Today the stars are still handmade. About 45 people work in the factory, producing the stars from January until December. During the high season the company employs additional people to make sure all orders are filled. About 200-thousand stars are produced from Herrnhut each year.
