How to treat hyperpigmentation with Ayurveda? - Dr. Mini Nair

Change of the normal colour of the skin is called as pigmentation. When it changes the colour to darker colour it is called as hyperpigmentation and change to lighter color is called a hypopigmentation. There are many skin problems that we come across especially in women there are certain problems like melasma, which is seen on the face, there is a brownish well defined pattern, which is usually seen in ladies after the age of 35 and now you can see in younger age groups with these issues. There are several contributory factors why this issues happen and it is very difficult to find the cure because there are various contributory issues than the simple cosmetic issues that we see. So these kind of management does not fetch any results at all.so when a person comes to an Ayurveda doctor, first we categorize these conditions, like melasma called venga in Ayurveda .It is an involvement of the vata and the pitta doshas seen. So there are various contributory factors. Not only the pollutants or the cosmetics or the harsh chemicals that they use that causes these issues. There are various systemic factors also that causes these issues. Systemic factors can be involvement of various drugs for various reasons that they are taking. There is an imbalance in the hormones in their system or any long term use of any contraceptive pills or antibiotic abuses that can actually lead to this hyperpigmentation. So when such a condition comes to us we do detoxifying treatemtn s.thatsi called the pachkarma of the Ayurveda .Among the pachkarma,virechana is actually advised. virechana with poorvakarma or snehapaananam with mahatiktagrutham is given followed by the colon cleansing. That is the virechana is undertaken. So along with this maintain a proper diet to maintain the pitta balance, we need to have a very good diet principle and it had to be followed. Avoid all kind of junk food and usage of all harsh cosmetics is avoided. Also adequate liquid intake with a lot of vegetables and fruits, especially al the nuts, all green leafy vegetables can be advised and intake of liquids is advised and one of the major contributory factors is the stress or it can be physical and mental stress and this has to be abstained. Treatment is afetr the detoxifying, we do the external cleansing, we use a lot of aloe vera. Aloe vera application has seen to lighten the skin and keeps the moisture. Also applying lepams using the rakta chnadana choornam, turmeric that is the kasturi manjal and shankupalpam. These are the combinations when applied has seen to lighten the pigmentations and followed by nasyam. Nasyam with application of kumkumadi thailam with application externally of kumkumaditailam, dineshavalyadi thailam, nalpamaradi thailam has proved to be very effective in cases of hyper pigmentation.
