The New Road to Urique, Copper Canyon, Mexico

Urique Canyon is the deepest canyon in the Copper Canyon complex of Chihuahua, Mexico, with the town of Urique on the river at the bottom. They just finished this new road that climbs out of Urique Canyon through many, many switch backs. The road was pretty rough and extremely narrow, with just enough room for our Jeep in many places. I seriously doubt that a full size pickup truck would be able to make it! Due to the extreme drop-off I had to pay very careful attention to my driving, but the biggest risk was the chance of any on-coming traffic with limited sight lines and very, very few places to pass. Fortunately we never saw anyone crazy enough to also be out on this road. The new road connects with an old road at the top of the canyon and takes you across the ridge line to then descend down into the town of Batopilas. Overall it was 46 miles and took us a little less than 4 hours.
