One of the busier grade crossings in the area. This is where the New York Central (the "Water Level Route"), Michigan Central, and Pere Marquette converged with traffic controlled by a switch tower (since torn down). Now you see Norfolk Southern, Amtrak, and CSX trains passing through. For years the two grade crossings were protected by four simple mast signals. Around the early-to-mid-1980s they were replaced by sturdy cantilever signals made by Modern Industries. Crossing gates were also added. The two sets of signals are inter-connected to activate both signals at the lines where the train is crossing. The lights and gate signals facing approaching traffic at the other crossing would also be activated. The gate and lights facing the other crossing would remain inactive. The idea was to prevent a line of cars from stacking up between the two crossings, where a vehicle might get caught on the tracks when another train might arrive on that line.
