Whether you want your speech in English to sound more natural or you want to speak with an American accent and sound like a native, learning how to connect sounds is a step that can take your speech to the next level! In this video, I explain how to sound more natural speaking English and how to speak with an American accent by connecting certain vowels with a W consonant sound. English has three vowels that always end in a W sound, but it can seem subtle. Non-native speakers aren't always aware of it and therefore don't always integrate it into their speech. It makes a huge difference because without the W sound, those vowels sound incomplete, and that incompleteness is more noticeable when one of those vowels is followed by another vowel. We like to use that W as a consonant to connect two vowels next to each other both in a single word and in a phrase. For example, 'graduate' has two vowels next to each other in the 'ua' part of the word, but in speech, they're actually separated by a W consonant sound so that the word sounds like 'gradu-w-ate'. This happens because the /UUU/ vowel already ends in a W sound. In a phrase like 'go up', where one word ends in a vowel and the next word starts with a vowel, we'll use a consonant to connect them. So 'go up' actually sounds like 'go-w-up'.
