After students complete this chapter and the related course work, they will understand how to manage trauma-related issues of the head and spine. The student will learn how to recognize life threats associated with these injuries as well as the need for immediate spinal stabilization and, potentially, airway and breathing support. The curriculum includes detailed anatomy and physiology of the nervous system and the pathophysiology, assessment, and management of traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries. This chapter provides detail about traumatic brain injury (TBI), including initial mechanism of injury, and primary (direct) versus secondary (indirect) injury. Transport considerations are discussed with a focus on potential deterioration. This chapter is skills intensive with detail on bandaging; traumatic airway control; manual in-line stabilization; placement of a cervical collar; immobilization of the patient lying, sitting, or standing; and helmet removal. 0:00 Introduction 0:09 National EMS Education Standard Competencies (1 of 4) 1:10 Introduction (1 of 2) 1:39 Anatomy and Physiology (1 of 2) 7:00 Skeletal System (1 of 5) 8:52 Head Injuries (2 of 4) 9:27 Scalp Lacerations 12:06 Traumatic Brain Injuries (1 of 4) 13:16 Traumatic Brain Injuries (3 of 4) 17:57 Concussion (3 of 3) 19:18 Contusion 19:44 Other Brain Injuries 20:07 Spine Injuries (1 of 2) 21:33 Patient Assessment (1 of 2) 22:22 Scene Size-up (1 of 2) 22:54 Primary Assessment (2 of 10) 25:31 Primary Assessment (10 of 10) 27:59 History Taking 31:17 Reassessment (4 of 4) 32:54 Emergency Medical Care of Head Injuries (187) 33:47 Emergency Medical Care of Head Injuries 70 36:01 Emergency Medical Care of Spinal Injuries (4 of 6) 41:24 Helmet Removal (5 of 6) 43:25 Review
