The Spanish sought to extract wealth and establish a society, which they did via the encomienda system and the Casta system. The French were more interested in trade, and therefore, despite their first permanent settlement in Quebec, they mainly established trading settlements in North America. The Dutch were also economically motivated and thus they established the trading colony of New Amsterdam. The English, however, were more interested in permanent settlement due to economic troubles at home and the disappearance of their land thanks to the enclosure movement.
