The Gulf of Corryvreckan is a 1km wide tidal race between the islands of Jura and Scarba, off the west coast of Scotland. On a full spring tide the sea can reach 8.5 knots with 9m waves and, in a strong wind, a roar that can be heard 10 miles away. This drone-flight from the north tip of Jura, on the morning of 10th August 2021, in a westerly breeze, was just two days after the spring tide, and the tide happens to be on the ebb, flowing east. But it is apparently even more spectacular when the tide is on the flood, flowing west, especially in a westerly wind. During the filming we were delighted to see a pair of Golden eagles soaring over the Jura crags. The small rocky island that I fly over (at 11'30”) is Eilean Mòr which is the island on which George Orwell was briefly shipwrecked in 1947. An easier way to make a drone-flight film of the Corryvreckan would be to launch from the remote mainland car park just west of Loch Craignish and fly 8km over the sea to the strait (which is within transmitter range of most DJI medium-sized recreational drones). However, because of wind resistance, the current battery technology would limit this to only being possible in extremely low wind conditions. That said, future drones should have better batteries as the years go by.
