Did you know that at one point, New Milford CT farmers were responsible for 8-10% of the tobacco grown in the entire State? "Havana Seed Leaf", introduced in the 1880s turned New Milford CT into “Tobacco Town,”- the epicenter of a regional industry that stretched from northern Danbury through Kent and Cornwall. In this video, New Milford Historian Bill Devlin gives an overview of New Milford's major involvement in cigar wrapper production and the history of a few prominent buildings and barns both downtown and beyond. Thank you to Mr. Devlin, Ruth and James Couillard, The New Milford Historical Society, New Milford Farmland and Forest Preservation Committee, Heritage Inn Recovery Residence, and The Library of Congress for contributing materials and permissions necessary to create this video.
