Hello everyone! Welcome to our final session on the casting process! Till now, we have discussed several casting processes such as sand casting, investment castings, shell moulding, etc. Back then, we mentioned several casting defects such as porosity, blowholes, etc. For example, in this image, you can see that the cast iron part is plagued with defects. Today, we will discuss these defects that occur in the casting process! First of all, what exactly do “casting defects” mean? Well, the irregularities observed in the final product after the casting process are called casting defects. Whether the final casting contains defects or not depends on the raw material used, casting design and process parameters control. It is extremely important to remove such defects as they have major adverse effects on the structural integrity of the castings. According to the International Committee of Foundry Technical Association, casting defects have been categorised as A- Metallic Projections B- Cavities C- Discontinuities D- Defective Surface E- Incomplete casting F- Incorrect dimensions or shape, and G- Inclusions. Here, each boldface capital letter is used to identify the defect during the casting process. Let’s talk about each of these defects!
