Cherokee, North Carolina, offers some of the best trout fishing in the Eastern United States. And, even with nearly 50,000 trout permits sold to fish on the famous Cherokee Indian Reservation each year, there's still plenty of trout to go around thanks in part to an aggressive stocking program managed and operated by the tribe. Team Pautzke arrived in town in early fall when fishing pressure was low to sample the rainbow trout fishery and found excellent action while filming this edition of Pautzke Outdoors roughly 15 minutes from Cherokee. Our success came exclusively on Balls O Fire salmon eggs. We walked the bank with a backpack loaded with Gold Label, Silver Label, Yellow Jackets and Orange Deluxe eggs and switched off every 15 minutes. All the eggs worked extremely well. However, as the trout became conditioned to one color we switched, which induced fresh strikes. Editor’s Note: A North Carolina fishing license isn’t required to fish in Cherokee. However, a tribal permit is. They are $10 per day and come with a whopping 10-fish limit. For more information please visit www.fishcherokee.com.
