Berklee Valencia students performed “Kesariya Balam” as part of Berklee a Les Arts: Sastipén Tali. Sastipén Tali, which translates as health and freedom in the Roma language, was a concert inspired by Giacomo Puccini’s masterpiece La Bohème. Moving alongside the musical trajectory of Roma people from Rajasthan to Afghanistan, Iran, Turkey, Bulgaria, Romania, Bosnia, and Spain, Sastipén Tali explored the libretto of La Bohème in reverse; from death to life, from isolation to community, to health and freedom, making us investigate and confront our prejudices installed against communities living at the margins of society, while celebrating the powerful role of art, when placed at the very center of life.
